5th Annual Coffee House coming......

The Hampton-Piggs Peak Partnership will be presenting the fifth annual coffee house for Swaziland at 7 pm on Monday, December 14 at Hampton High School. Please join us for an evening of music featuring an assortment of local talent. Admission is only $5 and all proceeds will go toward the Tyler Henderson Swaziland Scholarship of Hope, an annual award to students at Fundukuwela High School who embody and inspire the spirit of hope that will lead the students and the community out from under the cloud of AIDS.

At the coffee house you will briefly hear about our new Starfish Program. (The name is taken from the story at the end of this article.) A number of people have expressed an interest in supporting our efforts to pay for school fees and forming a one-to-one relationship with a student we are helping in Piggs Peak. Although school fees vary depending on the school year, a payment of $25 per month for 12 months will be enough to allow one child to attend high school for the year. By making this commitment through our Starfish Program, a donor will establish a relationship with one of the students we are supporting. We are just getting this program off the ground, but our vision is that you will get regular updates about the sponsored student. Also, if you choose, a unique cultural exchange may be enjoyed through writing and receiving letters.

If you are interested in becoming a Starfish Sponsor, the “donate now” function on our website (www.hamptonpiggspeak.ca) will allow you to set up an account and select the option of having a monthly payment of $25 deducted from your credit card. In the “message/instructions” section, just make reference to “Starfish Program”. Donations are tax deductible and processed through CanadaHelps, an organization that is serious about protecting donors and charities and makes your online security a priority. Alternately, if you want to pay by cheque, an upfront annual payment of $300 would be appreciated. By signing up now, you will be helping our Partnership budget funds for the upcoming year and allow even more children attend school.

The Starfish Story:

One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a boy picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean. Approaching the boy, he asked, “What are you doing?”

The youth replied, “Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them back, they’ll die.”

“Son,” the man replied, “don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? You can’t possibly make a difference!”

After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it back into the surf. Then, smiling at the man, he said....” I made a difference for that one.”

YOU can make a difference to a child in Piggs Peak. For further information on the Starfish Program or any other aspect of our Partnership please call Mark Bettle at 832-0003.
