An alternative to commercialism and materialism

An alternative to commercialism and materialism

If you are looking for an alternative to the commercialism and materialism that seems to pervade the season, there is a way to give a gift in keeping with the true meaning of Christmas. This year, as in previous years, the Hampton-Piggs Peak Partnership is offering Christmas gift certificates. These certificates feature the Hampton-Piggs Peak symbol that is illustrated on the partnership’s website – a Canadian in the snow and an African by his hut holding hands across the continents. The certificates can be issued in any denomination and include the message “In lieu of a gift, a donation has been made in your name to the Hampton-Piggs Peak Partnership. Your contribution will help protect the children in the Swaziland community of Piggs Peak from the scourge of HIV/AIDS. Thank you.” The message can be changed or personalized and emailed to you for your own printing. We have been told that in previous years these certificates have been given as gifts to recipients all across North America, spreading the word about the contribution Hampton is making toward helping our neighbours in Africa.

The funds raised from these gift certificates will be added to funds raised from other activities over the past year and used to support a number of projects we have planned for 2010. One of these will be supporting students in Piggs Peak by paying their school fees. We will also be providing day-to-day necessities like food and clothing for those in need. Other significant projects we are considering include a well for personal water and irrigation; development of communal gardens; and perhaps even a safe house to provide protection for vulnerable children. Of course the number of projects and the extent to which we can support them will be largely determined by the funds provided by the people of Hampton. To some extent this is a leap of faith as it is partly based on an estimate of funds we will receive in the coming year. The “donate now” feature on our website allows a contributor to make a commitment to a repeating donation that is deducted monthly from his or her credit card (tax receipts are provided for any donation). Your regular commitment for the upcoming year will be a great help in allowing us to make commitments to worthwhile projects in Piggs Peak.
