The Hampton-Piggs Peak Partnership will be presenting the sixth annual coffee house for Swaziland at 7 pm on Monday, December 20 at Hampton High School. Please join us for an evening of music featuring an assortment of local talent. Admission is only $5 and all proceeds will go toward the Tyler Henderson Swaziland Scholarship of Hope, an annual award to students at Fundukuwela High School who embody and inspire the spirit of hope that will lead the students and the community out from under the cloud of AIDS.

As we draw to the end of 2010, the Hampton-Piggs Peak Partnership Committee will be making some big decisions regarding the financial support we will be able to provide in the upcoming year. In 2010, we provided over $40,000 to finance a number of projects, the main one being the payment of school fees for 80 students at Peak Central and Fundukuwela High Schools. Committee member, Bev Harrison, recently returned from a trip to Piggs Peak that he generously paid for out of his own pocket. You will be hearing Bev’s stories in upcoming articles, some of which, Bev says, “bring tears to your eyes”. He confirms the need is enormous in this community where HIV/AIDS has infected over 50 percent of adults in their 20’s, most of these being women. Bright young children and teenagers have been left alone without parents to care for them. Without our help they will not only unable to pay for an education but, in many cases, also unable to buy clothing or food.

So we will continue to count on your help to provide the assistance needed by the youth of Swaziland. Our current fundraiser is the sale of calendars, “Hope in Action”, designed by Sue Hooper and Andrew Lamb. The pictures in the calendars will introduce you to some of the people in Piggs Peak and give you an impression of what life is like there. Our sponsors and contributors (listed at the bottom of this article) covered the production costs. This means 100 percent of the proceeds will support projects in Piggs Peak to help alleviate the devastating impact of HIV/AIDS in that community. The calendars are available at Holly’s and various other Hampton locations or by contacting me, Mark Bettle, or one of our committee members noted on our website www.hamptonpiggspeak.ca . We would greatly appreciate your buying one of our calendars and supporting our efforts.

Calendar sponsors: Coast Tire, Hampton Pharmasave, Advocate Printing, Barb Magee Insurance, Bayview Credit Union, Coleman Landscaping, Downey Ford, Hampton Physiotherapy, Hard Rock Drilling, Holly’s Restaurant, and The Links at Hampton.
