Hampton High School sponsors FIVE Starfish students

“Dear Friends in Hampton: I write this letter to say thank you for what you are doing for me. I really really appreciate it. You saved my life. I nearly dropped out of school because I had no money for school fees. I am a young girl of sixteen years who enjoys reading and dancing. I enjoy playing and laughing. I am very much appreciative to what you are doing for me. May God bless you. I love you all. Take extra good care of yourselves. Your loving friend, Phephile Penelope Mdluli”. (Phephile is a student in Piggs Peak whose school fees for 2010 are being paid through our Starfish Program.)
In my last article, I mentioned that Hampton High School had undertaken to raise enough money to support two students in Piggs Peak for one year through the Starfish Program. The goal was that each homeroom class would collect $25, the equivalent of one month’s sponsorship ($300 per year).
I am happy to report that, in typical Hampton fashion, the staff and students at HHS greatly surpassed the original objective. Thanks to their initiative and generosity, they have raised an incredible $1,597.60 to date, allowing HHS to sponsor the following FIVE Starfish students: Bethwell Sihlongonyane; Buhle Dlamini; Nomcebo Dlamini; Sibusiso Magagula; and Zandile Makhubu.

Laura Myers, the high school coordinator for the Hampton-Piggs Peak Partnership wrote the following message to HHS staff: “We all know that these types of fundraisers are only successful when teachers encourage their students… I would like to acknowledge Mrs. Donovan’s class which has almost raised enough money to sponsor one student themselves! Bravo! Also, Mr. Hall’s Theater Arts class is going to donate $300 from the door for the theater arts plays and Mr. Breen’s 112 Physics class is going to donate $100 from the spaghetti bridge assembly. Mr. Caines’ class raised $70.00 which he matched!”

I would like to add my thanks to the staff at HHS and, on behalf of the Partnership, extend our appreciation to all the HHS students who generously donated to support their fellow students in Piggs Peak. At times like this, we are reminded that we are all very much the same whether we are in Hampton or Piggs Peak; Canada or Swaziland; North America or Africa. Like Phephile, sixteen year-old girls all over the world like to read, dance, play, and laugh at school. But, unlike the young people in Hampton, many of the youth in Piggs Peak would not have this opportunity without our help. There is no doubt, Hampton is a giving community. But, through our partnership with the people of Piggs Peak, we have received a lot as well – no less than the appreciation, love, and blessings of Phephile Penelope Mdluli.
