What has been done in 5 years

It has now been five years since the Hampton-Piggs Peak Partnership was formed. At that time, through a significant donation from Presbyterian World Service & Development and contributions from a few generous Hamptonians, the Partnership was able to assist 26 high school students with school fees. Since then, the support from Hampton and surrounding community has grown to such an extent that we are now paying full school fees for 80 high school students and supporting a number of other projects.

In April 2005 I returned from Piggs Peak, Swaziland having seen the devastation caused by the AIDS pandemic and compelled to do something to help alleviate it. I realized three things needed to be done to help alleviate the impact of AIDS in that community. The first thing was to convey the terrible situation in Swaziland to the people in Hampton. Having spent most of my life in Hampton, I knew that the people here would be moved to help as I was if they understood the dire need. The second thing was to provide an opportunity for people to help. This was the reason for the creation of the Hampton-Piggs Peak Partnership which was established, as our tag line says, to provide “Swazi solutions to Swazi problems with Canadian help”. The third thing was to provide a means for people to help. By going to our website ( www.hamptonpiggspeak.ca ) visitors can see the projects we are supporting and click the “Donate Now” button to contribute to our efforts. Or they can join our Starfish Program and make a commitment to pay one child’s school fees for one year

I believe, through the efforts of the Partnership Committee and many other supporters, this “to do” list has been completed. But we have lots more to do. We have set aggressive goals for 2010 that will require increased support. With your help, I know we can do it.

It is also important to let you, our supporters, know your donations are making a positive difference. We will continue to provide feedback from Piggs Peak in the days ahead. But our fifth anniversary is probably also a good time to illustrate where funds have been allocated to date. In total, the Partnership has raised $114,000, distributed as follows:
• school fees $63,000
• food, clothing, and other support $27,000
• buildings and equipment $10,000
• vegetable garden projects $ 9,000
• Tyler Henderson scholarship $ 5,000

Who would have thought back in 2005 that our town of Hampton would be making such a big difference to the needy people in a community in Africa?
